Seth Meyers ridicules Trump's humiliating failed speaker bid in January

The next Speaker of Congress doesn't have to be a member of Congress, which is why Donald Trump is telling the press that he's getting calls of support for his candidacy.

Mocking the former president's desperation, late-night host Seth Meyers noted that the Speaker of the House doesn't even have to be a sentient human.

"It can be one of those air dancers outside car dealerships. Republicans would probably love that because it has the same hand movements as Donald Trump," he said showing a video of Trump gesticulating wildly.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

While Politico reported last week that Trump was considering coming to the U.S. Capitol to pitch himself for the job, ABC News' Jonathan Karl revealed Trump actually pressed for there to be a vote for him in January.

Karl explained that at one point on the seventh ballot, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) randomly cast his ballot for Trump for speaker, showing that there were even numbers for Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and just one vote for Trump. He was furious and called Gaetz, saying the only reason that there was just one vote for him was that people didn't know they could vote for Trump.

"Ok, so just to recap, Trump was then publicly supporting Kevin McCarthy for speaker, but he was also mad in the seventh round of voting that he only got one vote for speaker," Meyers said. "I'm sure when he saw this his text to Sean Hannity looked like this."

He showed a photo of a phone with a series of expletives.

"So, Trump then asked Congressman Matt Gaetz to officially nominate him for speaker assuming the votes would start pouring in, he continued. "And Gaetz did that. He stood up, made a big speech, and nominated Donald Trump to be Speaker of the House. So what happened? Did Trump get 100 votes for speaker? 200 votes? How close did he come?"

When it came time for the vote, Karl reported to ABC that only one person voted for Trump: Gaetz.

"Trump will always say he's considering something when asked about it," said Meyers. "A reporter could stand up at a press conference and say, 'Mr. President sources are telling us you're considering jumping into the gorilla enclosure at the Brox zoo and challenging the largest ape to a wrestling match in order to subdue him, claim his territory, become king of the primates,' and Trump would say, 'We're looking very strongly at it. I'm certainly getting a lot of calls saying, you're the only one who can defeat Mongo.'"
