President Donald Trump on Monday told American farmers to get ready to sell more crops domestically given that he is preparing to slap new tariffs on agricultural imports next month.
"To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States," he wrote on his Truth Social platform. "Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!"
Trump's latest tariff plan -- which comes on the back of his 25 percent tariffs on foreign aluminum and his planned universal tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian goods -- drew instant backlash on social media users who predicted it would reaccelerate inflation.
"America, 'have fun' paying more for your food," wrote the anti-Trump Lincoln Project on X.
"As long as the farmers don’t need to buy anything subject to the steel tariffs they’ll be in great shape," commented Media Matters senior fellow Matt Gertz. "Everyone else, have fun paying more for food."
"We're about to totally fuck up the market for your produce, have fun farmers!" cartoonist Tom Tomorrow wrote sarcastically on BlueSky.
Gizmodo reporter Matt Novak put the new Trump tariffs in the context of the history of U.S. agricultural policy.
"Exporting 'excess' products to the rest of the world and designing systems that preferenced U.S. exports created the postwar prosperity Americans have seen over the past 75 years," he explained. "It’s going to be so cool when U.S. standard of living falls off a cliff and MAGA has no idea why."
BlueSky user April Wolfe predicted that Democrats would pounce to take advantage of Trump's "have fun" post.
"Bruh democrats just need to post Trump’s 'Have fun!' over a bunch of rotting food and farmers losing everything," she wrote. "Make sure they know this is what he said!"
