Former Rep. Charlie Dent predicted a "political death" for Donald Trump in 2024.
The comments come after reports last week revealed the former president was recorded pressuring the members of the Wayne County, Michigan Board of Canvassers to reject the 2020 election certification.
“We’ve got to fight for our country,” Trump says in the recording. “We can’t let these people take our country away from us.”
Dent appeared on MSNBC Tuesday to discuss what the new recording would mean for Trump, currently the leading conservative candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
"While right now, Trump seems to be energized by the fact he's indicted, back down here on planet Earth, indictments usually spell political death and a conviction is even worse," said Dent.
"I mean, we can see the polls today that show maybe Trump has a slight lead over Biden but the election is not today and we're quite a few months away from the actual general election."
A group of Democratic strategists said as much in The New York Times on Tuesday. Drilling down on the polls exposes a solid chunk of voters unwilling to support Trump if he is convicted of a crime by a jury of his peers, analysts wrote.
MSNBC host Richard Lui highlighted "polling that suggests the impact of a conviction would be even more pronounced in the swing states."
He noted one poll found Biden winning six states by ten points if Trump finds himself convicted and sentenced, Lui said.
Former federal prosecutor Carol Lam explained that the secret recording could result in two new charges for Trump and his allies.
One of those charges could come from Michigan and the other could be added to the Justice Department's indictment of Trump for his 2020 actions, Lam said.
Lam argued timing was going to play a big role in prosecutors' decisions to pursue charges against a presidential candidate during an election year.
"Again, we are all working against a clock here," Lam said. "We're all watching the clock with respect to when all of these trials may get to actually be tried in front of a jury and that's the big question here."
