‘Disgusting’: 'Jarhead' author flattens Tommy Tuberville over military blockages

Author Anthony Swofford, an ex-Marine who gained acclaim for writing about his own experience in the Gulf War, on Wednesday described his view of a far-right senator’s move to block military promotions, and he didn’t hold back.

Swofford assailed Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut with Joy Reid.”

“It's kind of disgusting, really,” the "Jarhead" author said.

Swofford’s appearance followed reports from earlier this week that Tuberville’s blockade has left the Marines without a leader for the first time in more than 100 years after Monday’s retirement ceremony for Gen. David Berger, Commandant of the Marine Corps who served for more than 40 years.

Tuberville had single-handedly blocked hundreds of promotions for high-ranking generals and admirals since February, citing his opposition to reproductive rights.

“It's really important to young marines who have their boots on the ground that they have a leader, that they know that leader’s name and they really follow his orders,” Swofford said.

“So yanking that from the Marine Corps, and 60 other nominations, I think that he's holding up over something that you know, body autonomy for women who serve in the military is ludicrous. It's kind of disgusting, really.”
