Republican New York City mayoral hopeful Curtis Sliwa fumed Friday after a Fox News poll showed him trailing Democrat Zohran Mamdani on crime, but was promptly shut down on the network after he began to question the poll’s legitimacy.
Published on Thursday, the new poll showed that on the issue of crime, New York City voters favored Mamdani 40%, and Sliwa, 26%. Sliwa, whose mayoral campaign has centered around reducing crime, was asked by Fox News’ Bill Hemmer why he trailed so far behind Mamdani on the issue.
“What were the Fox people soliciting? The pimps, the prostitutes, the shoplifters, the gangbangers? Yea, they all want him as the mayor!” Sliwa said.
“I'm the law and order guy, everybody knows that! So right away that disqualifies this poll in my eyes. I'd like to know which people did this poll!”
Without hesitation, Fox News host Dana Perino shut Sliwa down with a direct answer to his question: “registered voters in New York City,” she said.
“Yea, yea right,” Sliwa said sarcastically, rolling his eyes. “Right!”
Mamdani won the Democratic primary election for the New York City mayoral race back in June in what was considered a stunning upset, running on a progressive platform that includes pledges to implement rent freezes, build more public housing and increase taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents. His victory, however, has sparked outrage among the wealthy elite, Republican lawmakers, and even President Donald Trump.
Sliwa considers himself among those outraged at the prospect of Mamdani becoming the mayor of the nation’s single-largest city, telling Hemmer, when asked how he believed New York City would change under Mamdani’s leadership, that the city would resemble that of an apocalyptic science fiction film.
“Well, Kurt Russell sequel, 'Escape from New York' part two, that's what you're going to see,” Sliwa said, referencing the 1981 cult classic film “Escape from New York.”
