An off-duty Las Vegas police officer and her husband shot a relative who returned home unexpectedly on Christmas night.

The officer, who was not identified, and her husband were sleeping about 11:30 p.m. Friday when the relative, who also lives at the home, returned, reported the Review-Journal.

The couple apparently thought their housemate was an intruder and opened fire on her with separate weapons.

The woman, who also was not identified, was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds but is expected to survive.

Police said the couple will not be charged in the shooting because investigators determined it was an accident.

The shooting is not considered an officer-involved shooting because the officer was not on duty, police said.
