Ramsey Orta, the man who recorded video of Eric Garner’s chokehold death, will likely spend four years in prison as part of a plea deal.
The 24-year-old Orta agreed to plead guilty Thursday in his 2014 Staten Island weapons and drug case, reported the New York Daily News.
“I’m supposed to be copping out,” Orta told the newspaper. “I’m pretty much tired of fighting.”
Orta, who has been arrested several times since witnessing Garner’s death at the hands of New York City Police, believes he’s being targeted for harassment as punishment for the infamous video recording.
Prosecutors recently dismissed a domestic violence case against Orta, after police said he roughed up his wife Feb. 13 at their Baruch Houses apartment.
It’s not clear why those charges were dropped, but Orta and his wife have since said they’re on good terms, and the couple have been living together in Las Vegas.
He has claimed that his food was poisoned with rat pesticides while jailed at Rikers Island, and he plans to eat only packaged food from the commissary while serving his sentence in the state penitentiary.
“I’m not going to eat the food that’s being provided,” he told the newspaper. “Hopefully I can raise enough money.”
