Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling launched a Twitter war with UK-based Christian Voice after the group sent out an anti-gay tweet about 22-year-old British swimmer Tom Daley.
The swimmer missed qualifying for the finals for the 10-meter platform during the Olympics in Rio. "Turning gay doesn't seem to have done Tom Daley any favours at #Rio2016," Christian Voice tweeted, linking to an article about Daley's failure.
Rowling, who is avidly pro-LGBT equality, attacked, saying, "Can't decide which is more offensive in this tweet, the stupidity or the spite," and linking to the tweet.
Christian Voice's tweet was retweeted over 220 times, while Rowling's tweet garnered over 8,000 retweets and twice as many favorites.
But the attack didn't stop there. Rowling's shaming spread as quickly as her tweet did, prompting her fans to lash out at the right-wing group for their bigotry and hate.
Avada Kedavra is the killing curse used frequently by Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series.
Some urged Rowling to ignore the tweet, saying that she was elevating the voice of those who speak out in hate, but Rowling shut that down too, saying that she believes she should call them out to highlight that social media should be a better place.
Desperate to garner more attention, the organization then tweeted that Daley only "went gay" because he was seduced by an older man.
Daley is engaged to American screenwriter and director Dustin Lance Black who is 20 years his senior.
A recent survey showed that those who read Harry Potter books are more likely to hold values like tolerance and oppose violence. They are also less likely to vote for Donald Trump.
