Without mentioning the GOP gubernatorial candidate by name, veteran journalist Dan Rather alluded to Florida's Trump-backed governor candidate Ron DeSantis when condemning "openly-racist rhetoric" from politicians.

Earlier on August 29, DeSantis warned Floridians that they would "monkey up" the state if they voted for his opponent, newly-nominated Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum — a black man.

"Openly racist rhetoric from elected officials and candidates brings me back decades to covering the civil rights movement," Rather tweeted Wednesday afternoon. "It's shocking - a potent reminder of our troubled time."

"But I believe most Americans will reject hate, eager to embrace a more inclusive and just future," he continued.
