President Donald Trump's legal team is making a gamble by refusing to let him sit for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.

Attorney Rudy Giuliani has said the president won't agree to answer the special counsel's questions in person or in writing, and a source close to the legal team said it's "Mueller's moment of truth," reported Axios.

Trump's lawyers are gambling on Mueller backing down rather than face a months-long court battle to force the president to be questioned, and the White House believes he will ultimately issue an incomplete report.

"Mueller backed off from a demand for a face-to-face, to get to a compromise of written Q-and-A on Russia," said a source close the the legal team. "And Rudy still says no. What is Mueller to do now?"

A source with direct knowledge of Trump's legal strategy said "there is no strategy" other than trying to undermine Mueller's credibility in public.
