Reacting to the bombshell accusations Donald Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, made against the president while entering a guilty plea in federal court on Thursday, newly empowered House Democrats are making plans to subpoena and question him in public.
Politico reports Democrats consider Cohen to be the "perfect witness" against the embattled president who is looking at investigations launched by as many as five Democratic-led House committees.
“He’s been at the nexus of so many different issues for so long, and given that Mr. Cohen was the president’s confidant and attorney, he knows a lot and he can shed a lot of light,” explained House Oversight Committee Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), who called Cohen “the perfect witness.”
Calling Cohen, "The perfect witness," Krishnamoorthi added, “I think that it will be good to hear him out and figure out what he knows.”
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who sits on the House Judiciary committee also has plans for Cohen.
"Obviously, you have to be a little bit ginger with anybody who’s been lying for a long time, but ... he is clearly going to be a truth-telling refugee in Trump world," Raskin stated. "And he has a lot to say about a lot of different things that are in the preview of the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee, so I would expect that he has something to contribute to the congressional investigations of the lawlessness of the Trump administration."
Incoming House Intelligence committee head Rep. Adam Schiff also intends to grill Cohen on Trump's Russia connections, telling reporters, he wants to look into whether "the Russians sought financial leverage of Trump and his associates, or hold any such leverage today."
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who sits on the House Judiciary committee put the implications of Cohen opening up on more of Trump's shenanigans into perspective.
"The noose is closing around the president," she warned. "Our job on Judiciary is to get everybody in front of the committee and subpoena people if we have to.”
According to Politico, Cohen's attorneys have yet to commit to their client appearing before any committees.
