Trump attorneys better lawyer up if they were 'colluding' with Cohen when he lied for president: Howard Dean

Discussing attorney Michael Cohen's admission that he lied to congressional investigators while serving as President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, former DNC head Howard Dean said Trump's legal team at the time could be in legal jeopardy if they were involved in the deception.

Speaking with MSNBC host Alex Witt, Dean was asked about Cohen's guilty plea earlier in the week and how it affects Trump's prospects as Robert Mueller's investigation closes in.

"Howard, when you take all this together, how damaging is this if the president knew that he [Cohen] was lying?" Witt asked.

"Legally it's not," the former Vermont governor replied. "You're allowed to lie to the public and that's not a crime. What you're not allowed to do is lie to investigators."

Dean then suggested that Trump's lawyers could have helped Cohen coordinate his fabrications with whatever their client was saying at the time.

"One of the things I find fascinating is how much jeopardy is the president's legal team in?" Dean remarked. "If the president's legal team was colluding with Cohen to lie -- concoct Cohen's lie -- then they're in trouble and not just the president. This is a really big problem."

"Look, Trump has no credibility except with those people who sort of believe in him as a religious figure," he added. "Everybody knows that he lies, and the question now is: has he crossed the line legally? And it looks every day that this goes on that he has more and more."
