Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on Tuesday got taken to the woodshed by New York Times Andes bureau chief Nick Casey for ignoring President Donald Trump's regular attacks on American reporters.
Rubio on Tuesday posted a tweet praising reporters for covering the violence that has gripped Venezuela over the last week as Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro tries to cling to power.
"I have tremendous respect for the journalists who covered events this weekend in Venezuela," Rubio wrote. "Their photos, videos, tweets & reporting is an example of journalism at its best; providing facts that influence policy makers and inform the public."
Casey responded by thanking Rubio for his kind words, but then proceeded to chide him for remaining silent as his own party's president works to undermine the free press in the United States.
"We appreciate your support, Marco Rubio," he wrote. "We'd also appreciate your support in defending journalists against attacks of 'fake news' by politicians in the US."
Casey's tweet was subsequently promoted by New York Times White House reporter Maggie Haberman.
