A CNN panel on Friday expressed astonishment that House Republicans appeared so unprepared for their first impeachment hearing inquiry into President Joe Biden.

After playing a supercut of witnesses at the hearing saying that they had seen no evidence that would justify impeaching Biden, host Phil Mattingly shared an anonymous quote from a House Republican aide who described the inquiry as an "unmitigated disaster."

"They got run over yesterday!" exclaimed host Phil Mattingly. "That's not my saying that. That's members of House Republican leadership, their advisers, saying that repeatedly."

Legal analyst Elie Honig also expressed surprise that Republicans were unable to present compelling evidence or witnesses to justify their impeachment inquiry.

"What a complete disaster and embarrassment," he commented.

Honig then noted that the witnesses at Thursday's hearing, if anything, undercut Republican arguments about Biden deserving to be impeached.

"You don't want your own witnesses essentially turning on you, as you just saw," he said. "For contrast, in the impeachment inquiry stage for Donald Trump's first impeachment hearing during that process, we heard first-person testimony from Marie Yovanovitch, Bill Taylor, people who became familiar, giving you direct evidence that was relevant to impeachment. Here, they're still looking [for evidence], God bless them."
