On Friday, a judge officially terminated the controversial conservatorship which has controlled pop star Britney Spears' life for more than a decade, according to The New York Times.

"At a hearing on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court, Judge Brenda Penny said the conservatorship that has long overseen the singer's life and finances should be terminated effective today," said the report. "In June, Ms. Spears, 39, told the court that the arrangement, which stripped her of control in nearly every aspect of her life, had traumatized and exploited her. She asked for it to end without her having to undergo additional mental evaluations."

Judge Penny found in her favor on the matter, saying, "The conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required."

The conservatorship has stripped Spears of most of her rights, even limiting her romantic life and the kind of mental health care she could pursue. Concerned groups have advocated her under the "Free Britney" movement. In August, Spears' father agreed to step down from management of the conservatorship.
