Trump's congressional allies will try to 'gaslight the entire nation' at Capitol riot hearings: CNN panel

Congress on Tuesday is starting hearings on the January 6th Capitol riots, and CNN contributor Errol Louis predicted that former President Donald Trump's congressional allies will use it to once again lie to Americans.

During a panel discussion about the hearings, host John Berman noted that some lawmakers such as Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) were denying that there was even an insurrection at the Capitol building.

Louis said that he expected Trump's supporters in Congress to push similar lines at Tuesday's hearings.

"These are the loyal followers who are trying once more to gaslight the entire nation and tell us we didn't see what we all plainly saw," he said. "[They're] trying to tell people that although there were multiple deaths, although gallows were set up outside and people were chanting [to] hang the vice president, it wasn't terrorism, it wasn't an attack on government, we didn't see people being gouged and maimed."

Louis predicted that Trump allies' efforts to revise history would fail, however, as Trump's diehards in Congress aren't as effective propagandists as the former president was.

"Instead you have the B Team and the C Team, and you have people trying to sort of lamely attempt to convince the nation that we didn't see what we saw," he said. "It's not going to work."
