Appearing on CNN the morning after the Maine secretary of state booted Donald Trump off of the state's ballot for leading an insurrection on Jan. 6, a former Republican state senator who helped lead the effort applauded her work — and then had a few words to say about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni.
Speaking with CNN's Erika Hill, ex-Sen. Thomas Saviello (R) admitted the Supreme Court will have to ultimately rule on the decisions now made by both Maine and Colorado to cite the Constitution's 14th Amendment and keep the former president off the ballot.
It was toward the end of the interview when he took aim at Justice Thomas, stating the jurist should recuse himself from taking part in what will be a historic ruling.
"When you look at this, given the makeup of the Supreme Court, what is your gut on what could happen?" the CNN host prompted.
"You know, that's a really good question," Saviello replied. "I think Justice Thomas needs to recuse himself and one of the justices [Justice Neil Gorsuch] made a similar finding in another court case that was before him before. So, does he change that decision? I think it's going to be very interesting in front of the Supreme Court. "
"You want Justice Thomas to recuse himself?" Hill pressed.

"Justice Thomas? Yes. I think all the stuff that's come out about him, and his wife on January 6th, he needs to recuse himself," he shot back.
"But again, just going back to the criticism that came from the Trump team, when it comes to Secretary of State [Shenna] Bellows, who was asked to recuse herself, because of comments she made about the former president. That's not grounds for her to recuse herself?" Hill asked.
"It is not," he bluntly stated. "What do they think, January 6th was okay for him to egg the people on? That's what they're defending."
