I’ve been reporting on MS-13 for a year -- here are the 5 things Trump gets most wrong

There’s one thing everyone can agree with President Donald Trump on about the street gang MS-13: The group specializes in spectacular violence. Its members attack in groups, in the woods, at night, luring teens to their deaths with the promise of girls or weed. One Long Island boy told me he doesn’t go to parties anymore because he worries any invitation could be a trap. A victim’s father showed me a death certificate that said his son’s head had been bashed in, then lowered his voice and added that the boy’s bones had been marked by machete slashes, but he didn’t want the mother to know that. A teenager who has left the gang told me he considers himself dead already, and is just trying to make sure MS-13 doesn’t kill his family.

Russia expert explains the extremely unusual disconnect between Trump's policies and his friendship with Putin

Michael McFaul served as Barack Obama's ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014 and before that on the National Security Council as special assistant to the president and senior director of Russian and Eurasian affairs. He is also a distinguished academic, who specializes in Russian affairs and America's bilateral relationship with Russia, and used his years of scholarship to help Obama develop his "Russian reset" policy.

Trump openly craves the kind of power Kim Jong-un wields -- stop telling yourself that he's joking

There is a tendency among the punditocracy to dismiss President Trump's authoritarian rhetoric as nothing more than red meat for his worshipful base: passing Twitter tantrums or hyperbolic salesmanship. He's been doing it from the moment he announced his run for president, when he insulted Latino immigrants as rapists. It continued through the campaign as he endorsed torture, summary executions and banning Muslims from the country. His ongoing paeans to ruthless dictators from Russia's Vladimir Putin to the Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte to his recent love fest with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un appear to show a genuine admiration and respect for the most ruthless and violent tyrants on the planet.

Trump's gang may be incompetent at a spectacular level — but they're also cruel and nasty to the bone

Our “I alone can fix it” president has gotten us in another fix, all right.

Is Donald Trump a liar? Maybe not — and that’s when things really get scary

There was and is no law requiring the children of undocumented immigrants to be taken away from their parents at the border. There is no crime wave caused by immigrants in Germany. (That nation’s historically low crime rate has fallen recently, and as in the United States immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens.) There was no measurable number of illegal votes cast in the 2016 election. Donald Trump’s inauguration did not draw the largest crowds in history, and in his first year he did not sign more legislation than any other president. (Indeed, he ranked last among post-World War II presidents.)

It may take hallucinogens to get us through the Trump years

I like to cook, and one of the things I most like to cook are mushrooms. Almost any of them are good to cook with — plain old white button mushrooms, portobellos, oyster, shiitake, take your pick — and it’s easy to sauté them with some finely chopped shallots in a little sweet butter. It wouldn’t hurt to throw in a couple of sprigs of thyme or rosemary, maybe a teaspoon of Dijon mustard and a splash of cream right at the end, and spoon over broiled chicken breasts, or sliced shoulder medallions of beef, and serve it with a picket fence of roasted asparagus and shaved parmesan. Yum!

The broadening criminal case against Michael Cohen just got a lot worse for Donald Trump

You may not be convinced that President Donald Trump colluded with the Russian government in order to win the 2016 presidential election, but one thing is clear: There are increasing reports that Trump colluded with one of America's most ubiquitous supermarket tabloids, the "National Enquirer," both during and after he was elected.

Donald Trump's staggering incompetence is no protection against his cruelty and inhumanity

President Donald Trump has now been in office for a year and a half. By this time, presidents who are unfamiliar with the ways of Washington (and that is not uncommon) have gotten past the rough spots, settled into the job and figured out how to work the levers of power. Some are naturally better at it than others and some take a while to get their bearings.

Philosophy shrugged: We're not doing enough to counter Ayn Rand's cruel prejudices

Philosophers love to hate Ayn Rand. It’s trendy to scoff at any mention of her. One philosopher told me that: ‘No one needs to be exposed to that monster.’ Many propose that she’s not a philosopher at all and should not be taken seriously. The problem is that people are taking her seriously. In some cases, very seriously.

Trump supporters show a complete and utter disregard for objective reality

Toward the end of the Second Great Awakening, a series of revivals that marked the first half of the American 19th Century, one Baptist preacher named William Miller confidently predicted that “Jesus Christ will come again to this earth, cleanse, purify, and take possession of the same, with all the saints, sometime between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844." Based on his complex calculations derived from the Bible, the minister was certain that the millennium would arrive no later than that spring day, when melting snow often still blankets the woods of the preacher’s native upstate New York.

Donald Trump backs down, for now -- but this political horror show isn’t over

A few days ago, fresh from what he thought was a triumphant summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, President Trump took a stroll on the White House lawn and talked to reporters about the family separation program at the border.

How Donald Trump's trade wars could lead to another Great Depression

Leaders are routinely confronted with philosophical dilemmas. Here’s a classic one for our Trumptopian times: If you make enemies out of your friends and friends out of your enemies, where does that leave you?

Here is the sick truth about Trump advisor Stephen Miller

When the news media provides facts without context it does the public a disservice. This is one of the core principles captured by the dictate of the five W's -- who, what, when, how and why -- taught in every high school-level journalism class. It would seem that the New York Times has neglected that basic rule.
