Nancy Pelosi: Mitch McConnell has 'endless tolerance for other people's sadness'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Wednesday blasted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and members of his caucus for refusing to provide Americans with $2,000 relief payments that are supported by President Donald Trump.

"Who is holding up that distribution to the American people? Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans," Pelosi said during her weekly press conference. "In blocking it, they are in denial of the hardship that the American people are experiencing now, healthwise, financially and every way. Their lives and livelihoods are on the brink."

Ex-Pence staffer slams Trump's 'incompetence and vindictiveness' after his Twitter tantrum on vaccines

On Wednesday, following reports that the government has carried out barely 10 percent of the vaccinations that were planned by this point, outgoing President Donald Trump took to Twitter to blame the states, tweeting, "The Federal Government has distributed the vaccines to the states. Now it is up to the states to administer. Get moving!"

This did not satisfy Olivia Troye, a former national security and COVID-19 adviser to Vice President Mike Pence — who slammed the president's "incompetence" and "vindictiveness" in a tweet of her own.

Trump again passes the buck to governors as his 'warp speed' vaccination distribution flops

President Donald Trump on Wednesday once again tried to shift blame to state governors as his promises of swift vaccination for tens of millions of Americans have fallen flat.

Trump and his administration repeatedly said over the last two months that they believed they could get 20 million Americans vaccinated by the end of the year, even though just over 2 million so far have been vaccinated with just two days to go in the year.

'Cynical gambit': Mitch McConnell condemned for pushing poison pills in bid to tank $2,000 checks

Shortly after blocking efforts by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Senate Democrats to force a vote on a House-passed bill that would provide $2,000 direct payments to most Americans, Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell late Tuesday introduced new legislation tying the checks to Trump-backed provisions to repeal legal protections for tech companies and establish a commission to study virtually non-existent voter fraud.

Senate Democrats immediately rejected the Kentucky Republican's bill (pdf) as a non-starter and warned the measure is an obvious effort to ensure that the $2,000 direct payments don't clear the Senate.

Visiting my mom through glass was supposed to be temporary. Now it feels endless

It was a warm day this summer when Mom and I sat on the veranda of the nursing home for a rare in-person visit. We were both masked-up and a good six or more feet apart. The young aide was momentarily distracted by another resident there. That's when Mom stood up, walked over and took my hand in hers. Dementia be damned, COVID-19 be damned. She was my mother and she was going to hold my hand, damnit. I held her hand back only for a second, then I said something like, "We're not supposed to touch mom, remember the virus I told you about?" The aide sprang into action and gently guided Mom away. ...

Wuhan virus cases may be 10 times higher than reported: China health study

The number of coronavirus cases in the city where the outbreak was first detected may have been 10 times higher than official figures suggest, according to a study by Chinese health authorities in Wuhan.

About 4.4 percent of the city's 11 million residents had developed antibodies against the pathogen causing Covid-19 by April, the report by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said.

First US case of UK COVID-19 strain reported in Colorado

The potentially more dangerous COVID-19 mutant strain that has set off alarms in Europe has been identified in the U.S. On Tuesday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced that the first case of the B.1.1.7. variant had been discovered in his state. It is believed to be the first confirmed mutant coronavirus report in the U.S. “There is a lot we don’t know about this new COVID-19 variant, but scientists in the United Kingdom are warning the world that it is significantly more contagious," stated Polis on Twitter. “The health and safety of Coloradans is our top priority and we will closely monitor ...

US expected to miss goal of vaccinating 20 million against COVID-19 by year end

The U.S. goal of getting initial COVID-19 vaccine doses to 20 million Americans by year’s end was looking like a long shot Tuesday. The Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed initially promised to unleash a vast stockpile of 300 million vaccine doses by January but later slashed its target and said it hoped to get about 40 million doses to recipients by the end of the year. But with just three days left in the year, the CDC reported Tuesday that only 11.45 million doses had been distributed since Dec. 13 with only about 2.1 million doses actually administered. “We certainly are not at the...

Weak Sauce? US relief bill may be too skimpy for restaurants

New York (AFP) - Washington's long-awaited pandemic relief package offers a lifeline to the devastated US restaurant industry, but eateries still face months of turmoil before they are clear of the coronavirus crisis. The $900 billion bill that provides more funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), comes too late for the estimated 110,000 restaurants that have closed their doors permanently. Those that survived the shutdowns and restrictions on indoor dining, can borrow up to $2 million in loans that would convert to grants if at least 60 percent is spent on payroll.  Despite some im...

Abbott says vaccine doses 'sitting on hospital shelves' instead of being given to Texans

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday that "a significant portion" of the more than 600,000 coronavirus vaccines delivered to health care providers in Texas "might be sitting on hospital shelves" rather than being administered to Texans. Saying "no vaccine should be kept in reserve," the state's chief health official ordered providers Tuesday to begin offering vaccinations to people over 65 and those with medical conditions, including pregnancy, that put them at greater risk of a severe case of COVID-19. Dr. John Hellerstedt, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Service...

'Operation Warp Speed' becomes 'Operation Flat Tire' as Trump's vaccine delivery fails: CNN's Acosta

On CNN Tuesday, anchor Jim Acosta tore into the Trump administration following reports that just 2 million people have been vaccinated, only 10 percent of the government's goal by the end of the year.

"I spoke with a member of the advisory committee, and she said part of it is how much was left up to the states," said Acosta. "President Trump seems to be tweeting exactly that. He's being defensive about this and saying, 'It is up to the States to distribute the vaccines once brought to the designated area by the Federal Government. We have not only developed them and put up the money to move the process along quickly but gotten them to the states.'"
