Florida hospitals are suffering dangerous oxygen shortages as COVID-19 surges: report

From Florida to Texas to South Dakota, numerous states are suffering surges of COVID-19's highly infectious Delta variant. And the situation is so dire in Florida that many hospitals, according to Central Florida News, are experiencing major oxygen shortages.

Central Florida News' Abe Aboraya reports, "The Florida Hospital Association is sounding the alarm, saying a survey shows 68 hospitals have less than a 48-hour supply of oxygen. Hospitals are using three to four times as much oxygen as they were before the pandemic because more than 17,000 patients are hospitalized statewide with COVID-19. The FHA survey, which was done (on August 25), shows 68 hospitals have less than 48 hours worth of supply, with about half of these have less than 36 hours."

Baby dies from COVID-19 amid Delta surge in Louisiana

A child under the age of one died from COVID-19 in Louisiana this week, the state Department of Health announced Wednesday.

The child is one out of 11 children younger than 18 that have died from COVID-19 in Louisiana. According to the LDH, this is the youngest COVID-19 death in more than six months, marking the growing impact of the Delta variant on younger demographics.

Five schools close due to rising COVID cases in Alabama town that hosted Trump rally

Five schools in Cullman, Alabama, are closing their doors for two weeks due to rising COVID-19 cases — days after former president Donald Trump hosted a rally in the city that health officials warned could be a virus superspreader.

The Cullman County school district announced Wednesday that the five schools will switch to remote learning from Aug. 27 through Sept. 10, saying that one-third of students at the district's 29 campuses were reported absent due to a positive COVID test or contact tracing.

South Dakota COVID cases explode after Sturgis motorcycle rally

Mississippi has already quarantined 15 percent of its K-12 students due to COVID-19 exposure

Schools in Mississippi have been open for less than a month -- and 15 percent of all students enrolled in K-through-12 education have already been quarantined due to exposure to the novel coronavirus.

The Mississippi Free Press reports that more than 65,000 Mississippi students have been told to isolate after being exposed to COVID-19, and the state has recorded a total of more than 11,000 COVID-19 cases in students since the start of the school year.
