The internet was mocking President Donald Trump Monday after he gave a rambling speech at the White House that touched on crime in Washington, D.C. and architecture — among other topics.

Trump spoke at the Rose Garden Club Lunch, where he had just rung the opening bell and marked the first day of trading for Trump Accounts. He started talking about what crime was like in the nation's capital before he returned to the White House and shared a conversation he had with King Charles about William the Conqueror.

"They used to go in and rob the restaurants," Trump said. "It was like the old wild west. They’d say stick em up, give me your money. The whole restaurant is handing them money."

Political commentators online were stunned by his remarks.

"Does anyone have any idea what he’s talking about?" S.V. Dáte, White House correspondent at HuffPost, wrote on X.

"I literally felt a pang of embarrassment reading this," Tom Nichols, staff writer at The Atlantic, wrote on X.

"Wow, the self awareness here is off the charts," Governor Newsom Press Office wrote on X.

"Says the convicted felon," journalist Alex Cole wrote on X.

"Someone who's been convicted of 34 counts of FRAUD resides in the White House," attorney and former public defender Frank Amari wrote on X.
