President Donald Trump earned mockery for repeating his assertion that most people were unaware of how the word "dumb" was spelled.
The 80-year-old president has been saying for months that few people knew the word ends with the letter B, as he attempts to brand Democrats as “Dumocrats," and he reasserted that bizarre claim Wednesday night at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas.
"I just came up with it a couple of months ago," he told the cheering crowd. "I said, 'You take out the E and you replace it with a U, and nobody knows that 'dumb' has a B at the end of it. Most people think it's D-U-M, and that's fine. So we take out the E, replace it with a U, and they're 'Dumocrats' because their policies are so bad."
Trump's oft-repeated claim once again mystified onlookers, who supposed that he may have only recently learned the spelling of the four-letter word that most schoolchildren know how to spell.
"You really put the B in dumb sir," scoffed Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D-PA).
"OMG his demented, dementia eaten brain said this AGAIN," wheezed the popular X account Spiro's Ghost.
"Never before across the vast epoch of mankind has one lone imbecile been so thirsty to flaunt just how profoundly their congenital stupidity engulfs their entire soul and every cell in their corpulent, flaccid body, and might even be contagious to anyone coming too close," marveled GOP political strategist Jeff Timmer.
"Also, the word gullible is not in the dictionary," cracked broadcaster Keith Olbermann.
"The rapist is deteriorating before our eyes," sneered writer Wajahat Ali.
"It's very DUM how many times he's gonna keep saying this," joked podcaster Bart Winkler.
"Looks like someone got a bad grade on a third grade spelling quiz," observed writer Larry Peterson.
"I think we can officially close the case on which child got left behind," noted popular X user Brynn.
