MSNBC's Mika 'very fearful' of how Trump's base would react to an indictment

Former President Donald Trump seems increasingly likely to be indicted over his mishandling of classified materials, and MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski is dreading the reaction by his most fervent supporters.

The former president is the heavy favorite for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the "Morning Joe" co-host said the nation would be wading into uncharted waters if a candidate was under indictment for violations of the Espionage Act and other federal crimes, as well as 34 fraud-related counts in Manhattan.

"We looked at the historical perspective here, [but] as an expert on the politics and the law, Claire McCaskill, what's the political potential if there is an indictment this week or in the coming weeks that, I mean, if we have a former president who is charged but not convicted -- because the process, I believe, takes well over a year, correct?" Brzezinski said. "Are we talking about -- couldn't Trump actually have the ability to whip up his base and he was running as someone indicted twice? I have a very, very fearful feeling about the potential here."

McCaskill, a former Democratic senator, shared Brzezinski's concerns.

"Yeah, no question he's going to use it," McCaskill said. "He loves playing the wronged victim by -- this would be the ultimate wrong, and his group, that 30 percent of the Republican primary voters, are going to buy in completely on that. So the question is will -- I'm not sure a trial would be after the election. I think the trial would be -- typically a trial after a federal indictment is not a year in the future."
