Former President Donald Trump maintains that, despite recent reporting that special counsel Jack Smith is considering charges against him for obstruction of justice and retention of classified information, he has not been told he is facing indictment in the Mar-a-Lago documents probe.
However, reports indicate he has received notice from the Justice Department that he is a criminal target. And while that document may not explicitly say Trump is being indicted, it's an almost inevitable sign, argued conservative attorney George Conway on MSNBC's "All In" Wednesday.
"What are your thoughts?" asked anchor Chris Hayes.
"I think the word that you could use here that was, probably inadvisably, used in the Georgia investigation, is that an indictment is imminent," said Conway. "I mean, I think it's highly, basically — they're telling him they're likely to indict him. It doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be tomorrow. Doesn't necessarily mean a tweak. It does mean that if you are a believer in the rule of law — for the rule of law, Santa's going to come early this year and it's not going to be in Christmas, it's going to be sooner, rather than later."
The caveat, Conway continued, is that "it's just rampant speculation that it could be tomorrow or the day after, 11:00 tomorrow, or next Thursday."
He continued:
"But it's just very clear, given all the indications which you laid out nicely, Chris, that we are reaching the end stages in the investigation," Conway added. "The fact that so many leaks are coming out now is a function of the fact that so many people know what is going on. Except the timing, because the defense lawyers are all sharing information about witnesses who have gone into the grand jury or talking to the FBI. And it's just the flood of information that's coming out and now, I guess, in Trump world, word has gotten out that the target letter has been received and that's, you know, it's seeping out into the press. So, you know, it's the end stages of an investigation."
