New polling that shows Americans believe president Donald Trump's tariffs have hurt their personal finances, and a congressional correspondent said those numbers were "disturbing" to Republican lawmakers.
A major shipping loophole closed Friday, removing the de minimis exemption that allowed shipments of goods worth $800 or less to come into the U.S duty-free, which allowed low-cost Chinese retailers like Shein, Temu and AliExpress to flourish, but a solid majority say the president's trade war has already hurt them financially.
"This is kind of the most stark, most telling poll that we saw," said CNN's Dana Bash. "I think, this week from the new CNN poll, which is almost 60 percent, almost six in 10 respondents say that the president's tariff policy is not having a good effect on their own personal finances."

Puck's congressional correspondent Abby Livingston said GOP lawmakers are aware of the numbers, but she said they're still too afraid to go against the president – for now, at least.
"I think we are in a very fascinating moment, because when I talked to Republican sources this morning, they're very much in a wait-and-see posture," Livington said. "Yes, they got good economic news today [in the April jobs report], but no one knows what this is going to look like in two months, and so I think a key thing to do is to watch the Hill and see if we see any uptick in pushback against the president."
"I think they are frightened to challenge the president," she added, "but this rash of polling was very disturbing to a lot of Republicans, and the tone of a lot of conversations changed from this past weekend on."
Those numbers match polling that show Americans views the first months of Trump's presidency as chaotic, according to CNN's Harry Enten.
"There's a reason why the clear majority of Americans say that Trump and this administration [are] chaotic," Enten said. "This week was a perfect illustration of it, right? He's, I dare say, 'Professor Chaos' from 'South Park,' that's his inspiration. When we started this week, my beard was completely black, and now it has white hair in it. Every single day there is just something new that happens, and ... the American voters don't like it. But here's the news for everybody, we're only 100 days in. There is, what, a year and a half until the midterm elections and 1,300 days left for the administration. It's just nutter butter."
