'Clueless as usual': Morning Joe shreds Trump's 'absolute stupidity' on foreign policy
MSNBC

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough excoriated Donald Trump's understanding of foreign policy and national security on Friday.

The former president and presumptive Republican nominee told Newsmax host Greg Kelly that European nations weren't spending enough to support NATO, adding that they were actually in more danger from Russia than the U.S. due to their geographic proximity, and the "Morning Joe" host ripped his claims to shreds.

"What I told [Hungarian president Viktor Orbán] is Europe is spending a tiny fraction of what we're spending," Trump told the right-wing broadcaster, "and the European nations, they should be paying the same. Their economies are approximately the same size if you add them all up, it's close to ours, and they're in a lot more danger than we are. We have a thing called an ocean between us, right, and they don't. So they're spending -- they have $100 billion, probably more than that less spending on Ukraine than we do. They should be spending money. I had the same thing with NATO, they weren't spending on NATO. I said, 'You got to spend on NATO,' and they did once I said it. I said I won't protect you, I would not protect you if you're not spending and paid up."

Orbán said this week that Trump had told him that he would "not give a penny" to Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion, saying the nation "cannot stand on its own feet," which his campaign has not confirmed or denied, and Scarborough criticized Kelly for not asking an obvious follow-up.

"Of course, the follow-up question, so, did you say it or not?" Scarborough said. "Obviously, he said it. In this case, he who does not deny admits, and, again, just the absolute stupidity. 'We have a thing called an ocean between us.' Yes, that will stop Kim Jong Un's nuclear missiles from reaching the west coast, that thing called an ocean, and will stop Vladimir Putin's missiles from reaching us, as well. I mean, Donald Trump, clueless as usual, but the takeaway there is Orbán was a better reporter than we saw right there, because Orbán actually told us what Donald Trump said."
