A solid majority of Republicans want former president Donald Trump to play a prominent role in the party's future, but MSNBC's Donny Deutsch says one of the GOP's most powerful players understands why that's a bad idea.
Although three-quarters of Republicans want Trump to remain a major force in the party, 60 percent of Americans disagree and 55 percent of say the twice-impeached former president shouldn't even be allowed to run for office again.
"Donald Trump is a loser," Deutsch said. "You point this out over and over again -- since he showed up, he lost the House, the Senate, the presidency, lost governorships. A Republican Party that is branded a Trump party is a losing proposition."
No one knows this more than the former GOP Senate majority leader, the "Morning Joe" contributor said.
"Mitch McConnell understands that," Deutsch said. "Republicans don't understand that so far, and they will have to go through another election cycle of losing to understand that."
