President Donald Trump received a rousing applause as he announced he was signing a bill which kills a California ban on gas-powered cars.
“I just said to Mike [Johnson], this is fantastic. I didn't think we were going to see this coming for a while," Trump told his White House crowd.
“We officially rescue the U.S. auto industry from destruction by terminating the California electric vehicle mandate once and for all.”
Trump’s remark gained loud clapping and cheers for almost a minute.
“They said it couldn't be done, but boy, it's been -- it's had us tied up in knots for years and they pass these crazy rules in California, 17 states would go by them. Automakers didn't know what to do,” Trump said.
The legislation Trump signed after his speech blocks California’s plan to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035.
Other states also adopted forms of California's rule. According to the Washington Post, those states collectively make up 40 percent of the U.S. auto market.
