GOP governor skewers Republicans who attack electric cars — then charge their golf carts

A Republican governor mocked his colleagues Thursday for lashing out at electric vehicles — and then getting behind the wheels of them every weekend.

Politico hosted a Governor's Summit in which it interviewed, among others, Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA).

Among the things he blasted his party for was their campaign attacks targeting electric vehicles — while zipping around in electric golf carts.

The audience cracked up.

“We just need to be consistent with people," said Kemp.

Rivian and Hyundai, both major manufacturers of electric vehicles, are starting plants in Georgia along with a battery plant, something Kemp championed.

The conversation then turned to Donald Trump, who has spoken out against electric vehicles as "job killers." In one speech, Trump went so far as to say that batteries are dangerous because, if they get into water, they will electrocute people.

“But if I’m sitting down, and that boat’s going down, and I’m on top of a battery, and the water starts flooding in, I’m getting concerned,” Trump said.

Most boats, even gas-powered ones, have batteries. Fuel-powered cars also have batteries.

Kemp was pressed on whether he worried that he's been critical of Trump in the past.

"I don’t really worry about that too much. We’re a great state and he’d be foolish, I think, to try to have retribution on a state where he has a lot of supporters," said Kemp.
