Attorneys representing former President Donald Trump on Friday made a last-minute plea to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from indicting him or his associates for their efforts to overturn his loss in the Peach State in the 2020 election.

Trump, who has already been indicted twice in two separate jurisdictions, faces the prospect of becoming a thrice-indicted former president as soon as next month, when media reports have speculated that Willis will unveil criminal charges related to her investigation into Trump's efforts to throw out Biden's 2020 win in Georgia.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Trump's lawyers filed an emergency appeal with the Georgia Supreme Court arguing that Willis and her office should be barred from leveling yet more felony indictments against their client.

In a seeming acknowledgement that their effort to disqualify Willis is a longshot, the attorneys write that "extraordinary circumstances" justify such an intervention, even though such moves are rarely granted by courts.

“Stranded between the supervising judge’s protracted passivity and the district attorney’s looming indictment, (Trump) has no meaningful option other than to seek this court’s intervention,” the attorneys argued.

Willis' office did not reply to the AJC's request for comment.
