President Donald Trump demanded thanks from California Gov. Gavin Newsom Thursday after sending active-duty troops and the National Guard into Los Angeles against his wishes.

The president deployed 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to the city, where protests broke out last week against the administration's crackdown on immigrants. But Newsom has challenged the move in court and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued an overnight curfew for about one square mile in downtown.

"Los Angeles was safe and sound for the last two nights. Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job," Trump posted Thursday morning on Truth Social. "They all worked well together, but without the Military, Los Angeles would be a crime scene like we haven’t seen in years. Governor Gaven NewScum (sic) had totally lost control of the situation."

Newsom has filed a lawsuit alleging Trump "trampled over" the state's sovereignty by federalizing California's National Guard, over which the governor is commander in chief, and he has warned the administration intends to do the same elsewhere.

"He should be saying THANK YOU for saving his a--," Trump complained, "instead of trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence!!!"
