The results from Tuesday's pair of gubernatorial contests forecast terrible news for Democrats and the possible impeachment of President Joe Biden, according to one conservative columnist.
Glenn Youngkin won Virginia's election by driving up turnout in rural areas and making inroads with suburban voters, and New Jersey challenger Jack Ciattarelli won 300,000 more votes than the last GOP candidate in 2017, and The Bulwark's Jonathan V. Last says both races offer a dark vision for the Democratic future.
"Democrats remain energized," he writes. "But Independents are turning on them and no longer view Trump as a salient issue. While Republicans are as energized as they were when Trump was actually on the ballot."
In light of those factors, Last argued, the Democrats are certain to lose the U.S. House next year, and probably the U.S. Senate -- and that could be apocalyptic for them.
"Joe Biden may well be impeached by the Republican House," Last writes. "Should a SCOTUS seat be vacated, a Republican Senate will not vote on a replacement until 2025, holding the seat open for as long as necessary. Trump will be the Republican nominee for president."
