Sparks fly at GOP debate as Chris Christie and Vivek Ramaswamy trade insults
Fox News/screen grab

One of the standout moments of the fourth GOP presidential debate in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was when former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy exchanged verbal blows over foreign policy, swiftly descending into personal attacks amid roars from the audience.

The fireworks began when Ramaswamy advocated for the U.S. to stop supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion.

"A lot are coming along with that position, with the exceptions of Nikki Haley and Joe Biden, who still support this, what I believe is pointless war in Ukraine," said Ramaswamy. "One thing they have in common is that neither of them could even state for you three provinces in Eastern Ukraine that they want to send our troops to actually fight for."

"Let me just say something here," said Christie. "You know, his reasonable peace deal in Ukraine, he made it clear: give them all the land that they have stolen, promise Putin you'll never put Ukraine in [NATO], and then trust Putin not to have a relationship with China. Let me tell you something." As Ramaswamy tried to cut him off, Christie added, "Don't interrupt me. I didn't interrupt you, okay? And tell us about that. You talk about it in every debate ... you say something, and all of us see it on video as we confront you on the debate stage. You say you didn't say it and you back away ... this is the fourth debate that you would be voted in the first 20 minutes as the most obnoxious blowhard in America. So shut up for a little while."

Ramaswamy didn't back off. "Your version of foreign policy experience is closing a bridge from New Jersey to New York," he said, referencing the Bridgegate scandal.

Before he finished talking, Ramaswamy also rounded on Haley once again, attacking her for her own support of Ukraine and saying, "These people are lying to you. The same people who told you about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify that invasion. Didn't know the first thing about it, yet they send thousands of our sons and daughters to go die ... You can put lipstick on a Dick Cheney, it's still a fascist neocon."
