John Oliver explains why the only thing safe about the Olympics in COVID-ravaged Japan is the free condoms
Japan is being crushed under the weight of the COVID-19 virus as the D variant spread and vaccinations were slow to start. While Japan has taken every step possible to protect Olympic athletes, "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver noted that things don't appear to be all that safe.
Protesters have been in opposition to the Olympics amid the virus for over a month. Now there are more dying daily of COVID-19 in Japan than there were when the Olympics was supposed to happen in 2020. As of now, only 6 percent of the Japanese population is vaccinated, according to Al Jazeera News.
"And while I don't know what the inoculation percentage should be to safely host the Olympics, I'm pretty sure that right now, it should be higher than the number of entries in the 'Fast and Furious' franchise," said Oliver.
So, it's no surprise that most Japanese people oppose holding the Olympics this year.
There's one big problem with that, however. Oliver showed a video of Tokyo Olympic President Seiko Hashimoto explaining that the Olympics are 100 percent happening. Oliver explained there's a reason for that — Japan has no say in the matter. Despite being the host country, the Olympic contract signed by the host country in 2013 doesn't give them the power to scrap the games. Only the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has the power to do it.
While the Japanese people are rightfully concerned about themselves and the possibility of people bringing the virus into their country, there's also the matter of athletes carrying the virus home to their countries and spreading the deadly D variant even further.
"It'd be like if your child got the flu and you tried to reschedule their birthday only to get overruled by the clown you hired," said Oliver.
In the end, the only positive thing about the dangerous 2020 Olympics is that Japan will still be handing out all of the condoms athletes need and more.
Apparently, during the Olympics, there is a considerable amount of shagging. Olympic vendors hand out free condoms to assure those at the games to practice safe sex. This time, however, Japan gets to show off its superior technology in the safe sex arena. Meanwhile, the Olympics is begging people to carry the condoms home and use them away from highly contagious and deadly viruses.
Oliver noted that one of the many good things about Japan is its healthy relationship to sexuality, safe sex and condom technology prophylactics. He showed a video of a web series where an animated guy finds a magical rubber that turns into a suit of armor and he fights evil.
"So, just your average education, contraception-themed SciFi, action-cartoon ad for Japanese c*ck socks about an animated war in which the dress code appears to be latex casual," said Oliver. "All of which is to be continued, or as that ad says, 'to be condom.' That is so much more fun than what sex-ed is here in the United States where it's usually, here's a condom, here's a banana, let's never speak of this again."

MSNBC host takes down 'spineless' Republicans who refused to stand up to dictators while Trump was in office
In just a short 60-second clip, MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan did an epic takedown of Republicans attacking President Joe Biden for what they called caving into Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The right-wing attacks on Biden began even before he met with Putin, with former DNI John Bolton claiming that Biden didn't know what he was doing. In fact, it was Bolton who didn't know what Biden was doing, as Biden wouldn't tell the public his demands of Putin before the meeting.
Biden made it clear in his press conference that he's ready to act if Putin decides to attack the United States again. He floated the idea of ransomware hackers taking control of the Russian oil fields, which would effectively bring down the entire Russian economy with a keystroke. While Biden didn't appear to make the comment as an overt threat, it was clear he was telling Putin that under his leadership, he's not letting Russia get away with it anymore.
It made it all the more unusual that Republicans would decide that Biden's threats weren't strong enough, given the past four years have been dominated by the GOP jumping when Putin demanded it.
"Republicans like Tom Cotton and Kevin McCarthy, Lindsey Graham, and even Mike Pompeo fell over one enough last week, in their attempt to denounce Joe Biden for meeting with Vladimir Putin, calling him soft on Russia and pathetically weak," Hasan explained. "To which my response is: are you kidding me? Where were they when they heard DonaldTrump hosted a press conference with Putin and took his word over his own intelligence agencies? And where were they when he said he liked Putin and praised as smart and refused for four years to say one bad word about the Russian president?"
He went on to ask where the Republicans were when Trump was exchanging beautiful letters with Kim Jong Un, claiming, "we fell in love, OK?" Then there's Xi Jinping. Trump claimed they would always be friends no matter what happens.
"And where were they when Trump went out of his way to protect Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from congressional censure over his killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi?" Hasan also asked the Republicans. "They didn't say a word then, so how dare they now, take the moral high ground on the issue of sucking up to dictators? The last people, literally the last people on earth who should be lecturing anyone on standing up to Putin or dictators are the spineless pro-Trump members of the modern Republican Party."

Capitol attacker's mother sobs talking about how Trump doesn't care about her son — or his jailed followers
CNN continues its reporting on Capitol attackers and the things that led them to bring violence to the legislative body on Jan. 6. Speaking to a series of true believers about the myths that inspired their riots, one man claimed that former President Donald Trump was "anointed by God."
But it was accused Ohio Trump supporter Donovan Crowl, who is leaving his family in tears while he awaits trial.
His mother JoAnn just finished treatment for Leukemia and she's worried that her son is about to spend the rest of his life in jail.
"I love the person he used to be but I despise the person that he is now," she said, breaking down in tears. "He's not my son. And I still have a hard time believing that he did what he did. If he gets 20 years in prison, he'll be 70 years old before he gets out of there. Trump doesn't care about any of those people that stormed the Capitol for him. He doesn't care one iota about them."
Speaking to Crowl through a cracked door to his home, CNN's Drew Griffin noted that his mother and sister have been saying that he felt bad about the Capitol attack.
"I feel bad about my case?" asked Crowl through the door.
"Feel bad about what you did?" asked Griffin.
"Well, actually, the things I did I was hanging out with some of the wrong people it seems like but I didn't really do anything so I feel pretty good that my case will come out and show that," said Crowl.
Griffin asked if Crowl felt like he was manipulated by other people into the attack, but Crowl slammed the door in his face, saying, "I don't watch your garbage, anyway.
