Writing for the Washington Post on Thursday, conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin drew attention to a study revealing little has been done to put more protections in place to preserve American democracy.
The report by Protect Democracy published a comprehensive report outlining the danger of attempting to overthrow an election, which could lead to a constitutional crisis.
"Republicans have pushed more than 200 bills around the country that would enable Republican legislatures to dislodge neutral election officials, challenge and overturn results and undermine confidence in election outcomes," Rubin noted. "For other elections they do not win, expect Republicans to try to delegitimize the results."
She went on to cite New Jersey Republicans who are using the Trump playbook to make false claims of election irregularities in the 2021 races just weeks ago.
Protect Democracy explained that the Freedom to Vote Act is the only option that can be applied to ensure full protection of America.
They also outlined that it is essential to debunk any fake election claims like the partisan "audit" in Maricopa County that ultimately uncovered President Donald Trump lost by more votes than initially thought.
The bill would include fixes to the Electoral Count Act, which would protect the United States if Republicans attempt to overthrow the election in 2024 and actually succeed in doing so.
Protect Democracy also demands accountability for those who attempted to manipulate elected officials with threats or lawsuits.
"If there is no accountability for past abuses, they will only repeat themselves more dangerously," said the report.
The plan goes on to suggest the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would fix the War Powers Act and ensure a balance of power between the "ever more imperial executive and a hollowed out and broken Congress."
Rubin demanded that conservatives must decide whether they believe in America or want to build a new country where they remove all freedoms and liberty from their foes.
