'Did he go to school?' Morning Joe baffled by 'socialist' rambling of Trump economics guru

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough blasted Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for accusing Canada's "socialist regime" of stealing from the U.S. ahead of a meeting between its newly elected prime minister and President Donald Trump.

The commerce secretary cast doubt on the possibility of cutting a deal to avert a trade war, saying "they have been basically feeding off of us for decades upon decades upon decades." The "Morning Joe" host mocked his understanding of basic economics.

"Did he go to school?" Scarborough said. "I went to Alabama. I took Econ 101 – I was reading Sports Illustrated in the back, I think I got a C-minus. You get the point. I mean, he was obviously two rows behind me. He must have been paying attention to something else. 'Oh, they're stealing from us' – what are you talking about? It's called free trade. It's called the global system where we benefit from what Canada does well, Canada benefits from us."

"This whole idea, him sitting there, and you're trying to get a better deal on tariffs – I get that," Scarborough added. "But for Howard Lutnick to sit there and act so completely ignorant about why certain car parts might be made in Canada better because, you know, it's cheaper for American consumers, and what we may do things better here and export to Canada. Who's he trying to convince there? Isn't he, like, a billionaire?"

"I really do think this is all not a bait-and-switch, I really do think this still is negotiations," he concluded.
