The Onion is making Americans cry tears of laughter over its "revenge" on Alex Jones.
News that the satirical news site had purchased the Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist's media platform Infowars — with backing from the families he was found liable for defaming in a $1.4 billion lawsuit — spurred hilarity and joy on social media Thursday.
"That's the biggest joke of all time!" political podcaster Tony Michaels said in a video post with a happy cackle. "The best f------ revenge!"

Michaels was not alone in expressing delight that Infowars was under new ownership — the satirical news site itself celebrated the bid with a gleeful editorial written by its parody owner Bryce P. Tetraeder.
"Founded in 1999 on the heels of the Satanic panic and growing steadily ever since, InfoWars has distinguished itself as an invaluable tool for brainwashing and controlling the masses," the mock-CEO explained.
"They are a true unicorn, capable of simultaneously inspiring public support for billionaires and stoking outrage at an inept federal state that can assassinate JFK but can’t even put a man on the Moon."
Independent journalist Meghann Cuniff took a less satirical but more affectionate tone when she shared the news with her readers.
"Fantastic," Cuniff wrote. "I love the Onion."
Journalism professor Jeff Jarvis expressed shock and delivered a succinct vote of confidence to Infowars' new owners.
"Wow," he wrote. "G'bless."
CNN journalist Bill Weir felt compelled to clarify his news outlet's coverage of the purchase was "not an Onion headline."
"The Onion buying Infowars is a pretty funny troll," admitted Sonny Bunch of conservative news site the Bulwark.
"This is absolutely amazing," added USA Today reporter Mike Freeman.
Popular liberal influencer "Angry Staffer" simply said, "i I needed this news today."
