Jack Smith cracks down as MAGA senator attacks wife: 'Not going to speak about my family'

Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith shut down Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) three times as the Louisiana Republican tried to question Smith on his wife’s political views.

“When President [Donald] Trump defeated Secretary [Hillary] Clinton [in the 2016 election], you were bitterly disappointed, weren't you?” Kennedy asked Smith during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Smith, who was testifying Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee to answer questions about his investigations of Trump, said he didn’t recall, prompting Kennedy to pivot to Smith’s wife, asking, “Mrs. Smith was, wasn’t she?”

“I'm not going to talk about my family,” Smith said, adding that he had worked in the Trump administration following Clinton’s 2016 election defeat.

Kennedy persisted in his probe into Smith’s wife, asking the former Justice Department official whether she was a supporter of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

“Your spouse — it's certainly her right, I'm not being critical — is an ardent supporter of President and First Lady Obama, is that right?” Kennedy asked.

Again, Smith told Kennedy he wouldn’t talk about his family during the hearing, and would only speak to his work as special counsel. Kennedy pressed on.

“In fact, she made a glowing documentary about First Lady Obama, didn't she? That she sold to Netflix?” Kennedy continued, referencing her work as an award-winning documentary filmmaker .

Adopting a more assertive tone, Smith refused to respond to Kennedy’s probe a third time.

“I'm not going to speak about my family here today,” Smith said. “I'm happy, though, to answer any questions you have about my actual work as special counsel.”

Smith led the Justice Department investigation into Trump related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents. Trump has frequently attacked Smith for his role in the investigation, calling him “deranged” and “a real sleazebag.”
