Special counsel Jack Smith has quietly withdrawn a second subpoena that he had filed to procure records directly from former President Donald Trump's political and fundraising operations when he tried to stay put in the White House following the election loss in 2020, the New York Times reported.
The decision to pull the subpoena to the Trump campaign follows the first subpoena withdrawal to Trump's political action committee Save America, established by his aides in the wake of the 2020 contest, first reported earlier this month by the Washington Post.
That withdrawal recorded earlier this month signaled Smith was in the process of paring down critical part of his inquiry into the political fundraising work that "fed and benefited from unfounded claims that the election was stolen," according to anonymous sources who spoke the outlet.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
According to the Washington Post, the PAC, Save America, hadn't fulfilled the subpoenas request and was still in the process of gathering "all of the records sought" by Smith's prosecution team when the withdrawal was formally made.
It's unclear where Trump and those familiar with the political and fundraising associates were in regard to fulfilling the latest subpoena.
The 45th president was charged back in August with conspiracy and obstruction related to attempting to sow chaos in the 2020 presidential election.
Smith’s office hasn't let off the gas until now, having sought subpoenas from groups and individuals in its effort to discern if Trump and fellow Republican personnel were involved in any coordinated efforts to overturn the election both prior and after the Jan. 6, 2021 siege on the U.S. Capitol.
