Insurrection can be a difficult topic to talk about, especially when you're a long-shot Republican presidential candidate on national television. That's particularly true when the host questioning you about it makes a small slip, as Nikki Haley learned during her interview with CNN host Jake Tapper on Monday.
"The explanation is not that they didn't like Donald Trump," Tapper told Haley, "they said that he participated in an erection."
Haley grinned a little bigger.
"An insurrection, sorry," the CNN host said with an awkward smirk. Haley looked briefly off camera, and held a very straight face.
She however did allow herself a smile when Tapper, visibly embarrassed, explained he'd woken up at 5 a.m. to do Kasie Hunt's show and he was "exhausted."
The smile lasted just as long as it took for Tapper to pivot back the topic at hand: the Supreme Court's decision not to ban former President Donald Trump from Colorado's ballot based on his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol.
"I think they made the right decision," Haley affirmed. "Let the people decide."
