Democrat Jay Jones was projected as the winner in Virginia's attorney general race on Tuesday night, defeating incumbent Republican Jason Miyares, a key win for Democrats as they look ahead at the 2026 midterm election.

The race was called Tuesday night by CNN, just hours after polls closed at the 8 p.m. EST deadline. Jones, a former Virginia state lawmaker saw his campaign was mired in scandal after his old text messages were published, some of which appeared to advocate for violence against Republicans.

Miyares ran a campaign that tried to appeal to split-ticket voters, as former Democrat Rep. Abigail Spanberger surged in the gubernatorial polls. Spanberger was quickly projected as the winner in that race.
