Vice President JD Vance attempted to move the goalposts during an appearance on Fox News' "Special Report with Bret Baier" when he was asked whether the Trump administration achieved its goals by bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities.
"The president has said [the strikes] totally obliterated the Iran nuclear program. Do you know for sure where all of the highly enriched uranium is?" Baier asked.
"Well, Bret, I actually think that's not the question before us," Vance responded. "The question is, can Iran enrich uranium to a weapons-grade level, and can they convert that fuel to a nuclear weapon.
"We know, based on the success of our mission, the leadership of our President, and the incredible skill of our military, that the two mission objectives are completely successful," Vance continued.
The vice president's comments come as questions about the efficacy of the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities continue to swirl. Some experts have suggested that Trump's true motivation for striking Iran was political and not based solely on national security.
"Our goal was to bury the uranium, and I do think the uranium is buried," Vance said. "But our goal was to eliminate the enrichment and eliminate that enriched fuel from a nuclear weapon."
"If the Iranian government survives as is, what's to stop it from rebuilding over time if they in fact moved the enriched uranium?" Baier asked.
Vance again changed the premise of the question, choosing to instead focus on Iran's enrichment capabilities and not its supply of enriched uranium.
"They don't have the ability to convert it to a nuclear weapon," Vance said. "That is mission success."
