The only Democrat to have taken on now Sen. J.D. Vance in a campaign debate is sharing his debating tips to Gov. Tim Walz (MN).

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) unsuccessfully fought Vance two years ago for an open Senate seat in Ohio.

“I want to debate Tim Walz, Vance told CNN's Dana Bash on Sunday. "We believe in answering questions. We believe in debating."

Speaking to Scripps News, Ryan advised Democratic vice presidential running mate Walz to highlight who Vance is rather than who he purports to be.

"[He] and Trump are very, very similar," Ryan said. "It's all negative. It's all attack. It's all personal attacks on people. And what the problem is, they've lost the room."

"I think in '16, even some in '20, that had some appeal. But I think now people are so exhausted. There's an exhausted majority in the country that that's not going to appeal to anymore."

Ryan mentioned Vance's mudslinging about Walz's 24-year military career, and the governor's refusal to take the bait. According to Ryan, Americans don't want to hear the constant bickering Trump's campaigns are known for.

"They're not talking about the American people. They're not talking about jobs," Ryan said of Trump and Vance.

He added that Walz should focus on why Vance joined Trump's campaign, saying the senator, "Saw it as an opportunity to advance his own career, and I think it showed you exactly who J.D. Vance is. I don't think he's changed that much. I think the spotlight on him now is revealing who he really is."

"It's tired. They've lost the room," he continued. "It's been the same negativity. But the people want to move into some happiness, some joy, some relief, from the exhaustion."
