As Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) held a rally in Byron Center, Michigan for former President Donald Trump's election campaign, the recently-minted running mate tried to solicit questions from reporters local to the state of Michigan, openly dismissing national reporters.
But, after a minute of unsuccessfully trying to find any Michigan reporters there to ask questions, he resigned himself to engaging with the national media instead.
"I believe if y'all are willing to stick out the heat a little bit longer, we're going to do some interviews with some real news and some fake news," said Vance, a Marine veteran and former venture capitalist made famous by his "Hillbilly Elegy" memoir.
"I think we have some reporters in the front. And what I'd ask is that if you're a local reporter from Michigan, raise your hand first. I'd like to take your questions first and then I'll go down the line. Everybody get ready because we're going to have some fun with the American media."

After a smattering of applause but no takers, Vance continued. "Question in the air, especially if you're from Michigan. Anybody, any local reporters from Michigan? I guess maybe we got them all back there. Okay, they're on camera? Well, you'll catch on camera what I say."
"We'll start with a person who's from Michigan but represents the national press," he added.
Vance, who once professed to being anti-Trump before adopting a MAGA political brand in his run for Senate, has faced catastrophic unfavorability polls since being named as Trump's running mate in the 2024 campaign, coming under criticism for his comments about "childless cat ladies" running the Democratic Party.
