Rep. Jim Jordan's apparently vanishing hope of replacing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as the speaker of the House looks like it took another hit Monday as rebelling GOP House members hinted they have another candidate they will put forward when a vote is called on Tuesday.
On Sunday, CNN reported that 20 or more members of the House GOP caucus were plotting to derail Jordan's plan to become the GOP's face of the House.
Now Politico is reporting he is facing another speedbump on the road to the speakership as moderates coalesce around another challenger.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
According to the report from Politico's Olivia Beavers, this is an "unwelcome development" for the Ohio Republican whose allies were reportedly threatening retribution against Jordan's detractors over the weekend.
Beavers wrote the news of another challenge, "will further complicate his rocky bid to get to 217 votes on the House floor. Few House Republicans had predicted he would face a competitor after he won the conference’s nomination on Friday."
She added, "Jordan allies, meanwhile, want to charge into a floor vote with the hope that the public pressure from the conservative base, radio talk show hosts, and their own GOP colleagues, among others, will change the holdouts’ minds. Not to mention the threat of a primary challenge."
