An attorney representing former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday blamed his client's age for his seemingly self-destructive decision to continue lobbing smears against defamed Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss.
According to Politico's Kyle Cheney, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Beryl Howell began the day's damages trial by scolding Giuliani for once again making baseless accusations against Freeman and Moss, despite the fact that he had already been found liable for defaming them after the 2020 presidential election.
Howell noted that Giuliani attorney Joe Sibley argued that both Freeman and Moss were "good people" who did not deserve to be falsely accused of stealing the 2020 election for President Joe Biden.
Howell then asked Sibley how this was reconcilable with his client's tirade against the two women on Monday afternoon.
"I’m not sure how it’s reconcilable," Sibley acknowledged, before pivoting to pointing the finger at Giuliani's age as a potential culprit.
"This has taken a bit of a toll on him," Sibley said, per Cheney. "He’s almost 80 years old. I think he was sitting here all day at trial at his age."
Howell, however, was not buying it and she noted that Giuliani appeared to be attentive throughout Monday's hearings.
"Can he follow instructions?" Howell asked Sibley.
"The answer, of course, is yes," Sibley replied.
The current trial is set to determine how much money Giuliani will have to pay to Freeman and Moss after he falsely accused them of stuffing ballot boxes for Biden in 2020.
