Rep. Michael Baumgartner (R-WA) took to social media Friday night to complain about having to work late and miss his child’s basketball game – and was subsequently dogpiled by a swath of MAGA supporters.
The House worked late Friday night to pass its own version of a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has remained unfunded since February after Democratic lawmakers declined to support it without major reforms to immigration enforcement agencies within DHS.
The funding lapse has caused major staffing shortages at airports nationwide, sparking chaos and long lines for travelers. But for Baumgartner, missing a family event appeared to be top of mind for the Washington lawmaker.
“I’m fully aware that this job requires tons of travel and crazy hours,” Baumgartner wrote Friday night in a social media post on X.
“But it does indeed bug me that I’m here in DC at 11:30pm voting (for the 4th time!) to fully fund the Homeland budget and missing my kids hoops game tomorrow morning back in Washington because the Senate pulled their BS stunt last night.”
Baumgartner’s post was immediately met with ridicule from a number of self-proclaimed MAGA supporters.
“Listen here you whiny b----! None of you have done a damn thing for Americans. You have sat on your hands, while only talking about the issues,” wrote X user “Faithful Beacon,” a self-proclaimed MAGA supporter in response to Baumgartner’s social media post.
“You get plenty of time off. Now think about all those parents who have to work 40+ hours EVERY DAMN WEEK, no vacations NOTHING so they can make ends meet. Think about EVERY SERVICE member that misses out on their children's lives while serving the United States. Ya know, so YOU Michael can sit here and cry about missing your kids basketball game. Oh gods you have to work until 11pm, FOR F---- SAKE!”
Another self-proclaimed MAGA supporter, X user “Romich,” noted the generous benefits members of Congress enjoy, which include ample time off and six-figure salaries.
“Your job also gives you tons of time off and great perks,” they wrote in a social media post on X to their more than 4,500 followers. “If you’re looking for sympathy you may not find it here.”
And X user “HairForceOne,” another self-proclaimed MAGA supporter, demanded that Baumgartner stop complaining and do his job.
“I missed COUNTLESS birthdays and concerts when my son was little because I was doing my JOB in the emergency room,” they wrote in a social media post on X to their nearly 1,500 followers. “F--- you. YOU wanted this job. YOU GOT this job. Now DO YOUR JOB.”
