House Republicans' decision to nominate Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) over Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for speaker is yet another indication that former President Donald Trump is a "loser," his niece Mary Trump, a psychologist, posted to X on Wednesday.

"Make no mistake. There was one BIG loser today and it wasn’t Jim Jordan," she wrote. "It was Donald."

"Donald today learned once again that his endorsement means nothing — or even better — spells doom for whoever accepts it," she continued. "His grip over the Republican Party is eroding faster than his net worth. Donald is a cheap conman still charging for his cheap product, but a lot of people aren’t buying it anymore. He’s a nothing. He’s a loser."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

Trump had previously been floated by some members of Congress as a candidate for speaker himself, which would have fractured the GOP caucus further and caused additional challenges, not least that House rules might actually prevent someone under indictment from holding leadership positions. Ultimately, Trump's aides reportedly talked him out of a speakership candidacy, and he instead threw his support behind Jordan, a firebrand who has been leading investigations against the FBI for probing the former president's actions.

Earlier today, the House GOP caucus decided to buck Trump's endorsement and back Scalise, with Jordan himself urging his supporters to get behind that nomination. While Scalise now commands a clear majority among the GOP, a handful are currently refusing to back him, setting up another possible gridlock situation like the one that required Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to go through 15 ballots to be elected speaker.
