Hours after launching a 2026 comeback campaign for a Texas House seat, former Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) announced she had been hospitalized.

“Former and future Congresswoman Mayra Flores, a devoted conservative fighting corruption in Texas's 28th District, has been hospitalized,” according to a post on her X account. “During this challenging time, we humbly ask for your prayers and support. We pray that Mayra will return stronger than ever, ready to continue her unwavering commitment to serving our country.”

Flores became the first Mexican-born member of Congress after she won a special election in Texas’s 34th Congressional District when U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela Jr. resigned. She served roughly six months before being defeated by Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) in the 2022 midterms.

Earlier Tuesday, Flores announced she was “deeply honored” to announce a new congressional campaign – this time in a bid to unseat Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) – a moderate Democrat facing federal charges on a series of corruption allegations, including bribery and money laundering.

“Mayra's passion for building a brighter future for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come is at the heart of everything she does. Guided by faith and determination, she remains steadfast in her mission during this critical moment,” according to the social media post written by her staff. “Thank you for standing with her.”
