According to a report from the Washington Post, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is increasingly being seen as ineffective as the combination of age and the rise of Donald Trump have made him a secondary figure within the Republican Party.

As the report notes, McConnell's health already has some of his GOP colleagues circling looking to take his top spot with the prospect that the GOP could take control of the Senate in 2024.

But adding to that, the Post points out that since Trump has been in and out of the presidency over the past seven years, no less than 10 GOP senators have been seated who take their cues from the former president who is seeking a second term in his third bid for the Oval Office.

According to the report, McConnell is sitting back and not expecting much to come out of the GOP-controlled House which Washington Post analyst Paul Kane described as "a fractious, ungovernable dumpster fire."

As for McConnell, Kane wrote, "But now, as the intraparty politics have turned so sharply away from that type of leadership, McConnell understands the limitations of his power," before adding, "McConnell’s closest friends recognize his past hold on the Senate GOP has slipped."

According to Sen John Cornyn (R-TX), who is possibly in line to take McConnell's place when he leaves, "He’s a master at the process. But I think there is a little more individuality, shall we say, certainly in the Republican conference.”
